CORFU: MORE THAN JUST AN ISLAND IN GREECE

I've been meaning to write about Corfu ever since, especially since it's usually set apart from its more popular counterparts of Santorini and Mykonos. The second largest island in the Ionian Sea, Corfu has its own share of attractions and activities. It is home to a number of beautiful beaches, gorges, mountains valleys and even active volcanoes.

This was the first stop of our cruise, and since it was the summer, it was really hot and humid in Crete. I suggest you bring enough hats and maybe even an umbrella.

We first visited Paleokastritsa, a monastery in Corfu. Aside from the beautiful orthodox church, you get to have one of the best views of the Ionian Sea from here. Take home beautiful photos of the monastery garden and maybe if you want to, pick yourself some grapes.

Our second stop was of course, the Achilleon Palace. This is one of the most popular tourist spots in Corfu. Inside the palace, you'll learn more about the history of Corfu and the Greek Orthodox. The palace was previously built for the Austrian empress Elisabeth of Bavaria and was an expression of her profound love for Greece. The architecture of the palace and the beautiful gardens are one of the highlights of the palace.

If you have seen the James Bond movie, "For Your Eyes Only", you'll remember the casino scene which was filmed here at the Achilleon Palace.

And of course, who could forget, the Corfu Old Town? This was where we spent most of our day in Corfu. The streets were really colorful.

My mom and I even ended up shopping for a few items along the streets. They have really beautiful shops here that sell Greek-inspired apparel. Some shops sell everything in white! It's nice to take home some olive oil or olive oil soaps from here. Just watch out for the tourist traps and make sure you compare the prices. 

 

If you're wondering about food, get the lamb souvlaki! We ate at this really good restaurant and I enjoyed the Greek salad so much I wanted to take some home! If you're looking for wifi, the first few restaurants along the street offer free wifi (they don't have passwords too).
